FAQs
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we've gotten over the years... (for Asheville in-person classes, we have a separate FAQs page here).
1. How much fabric (or how many items) will a packet of dye cover?
For our prepared ice dye powders, each packet is designed with the right amounts of materials for about 1 yard of fabric, or one large t-shirt or small dress. If you sprinkle lightly, you could stretch it further! Please know your results may vary depending on how concentrated of an area you use the dye on (and only plant fibers will take color with these dyes). Need more coverage? Order more colors (or get 2x the amount)!
2. What if I buy multiples of the same color of dye powder?
If you order 2+ of the same color, we will double the amount of soda ash and dye powder into one baggie to avoid having to waste extra packaging. If you order 2+ of the same color and want separate baggies of that color, please send us a message with your order to let us know.
3. The color my custom garment ended up isn't what I was picturing based on your online swatches! Why?
Dye baths are sort of a living thing-- every time we mix one up, it is slightly different than the time before, and we love that. With hand dyed fabrics it helps to remember that colors vary from screen to screen, and device to device. We aim to get the end product as close to what we think you want as possible, but there are surprises in store even for very experienced dyers like us!
4. Do you accept returns or exchanges?
Not on custom dyed clothing, no. As a micro business featuring handmade, custom clothing and home goods, we simply do not have the margins or overhead allowances to let us make things twice. Now, if we mess up (wrong size, completely wrong color, misspelled words), of course we will remake your garment or item! We usually just ask you to keep or give away the wrong one, because we don't need it back. For our kits, supplies, and materials for making, the same goes: if we send you the wrong thing, we will send you the correct thing ASAP. If we forget a part of your order, we will ship it out the minute we realize it. But we do not accept returns or exchanges of any dyes, woodblocks, or kits.
5. Where is my package?
Lately this has been a big one. You should have an email with your tracking info, that is automatically generated when we make the shipping label. Check your spam or junk inbox if you don't see it. We have access to the same tracking information that you do, and Shopify is great at updating tracking info that they get from the USPS.
However, often the USPS will mark something as delivered 1-2 days before you actually see it show up. Why? We wish we knew! Once the package leaves our hands, it is at the mercy of the USPS and we have zero control or info of what happens next. You as the recipient can open a claim with your post office if you truly think your package was delivered to the wrong address (or never at all). WAXON cannot go to the post office for you, nor can we open a claim for you. 99.99% of our packages arrive safely, just not always on the exact day they are marked as "out for delivery."
6. My ice dye results don't look like yours. What did I do wrong?
Probably nothing. Ice dyed cloth is FULL of surprises. Unlike bottle tie-dye where the colors you see are mostly what you get, in ice dyeing the dyes "split" over the ice cubes and turn into many beautiful and surprising shades. This is what gives ice dye its gorgeous, ethereal properties. You will be fascinated by the results, but results will look different on every different fabric that you dye! Changing anything between our studio and yours, e.g., weight of fabric, size of ice cubes, how fast the ice melts, fiber content of the fabric, and even Ph of the tap water can result in wildly different splits and saturations.
7. I joined the "Color of the Month Club" and I want to know ahead of time what color(s) I will be sent. Can you tell me, if I email you?
Nope, sorry! We won't send you anything we don't think is really cool and different from what we've carried before, but we can't spoil the surprise or let you pick and choose. You just have to trust the mystery.
8. I bought dye powder but there are no instructions! If I email or text you, can you teach me how to use it?
This is what our kits are for-- they have great, step by step instructions for first time dyers! If you don't purchase a kit, but need instructions, we have a digital download available immediately so you can get to dyeing. Or you can peruse our blog tutorials, our YouTube Channel, or enroll in our online dye school! Thank you for understanding that we cannot teach for free outside of the resources just mentioned.
